Banana - with vitamins A, B, C and E has detoxifying properties, is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, effective in treating acne. Banana is also an effective moisturizer containing potassium and antioxidants that can soothe dry skin, helping reduce fine lines. Banana is a great beauty treatment for skin and hair, because it contains an amino acid called tryptophan, a protein which plays a role in anti-aging.
Beer - born in ancient Egypt and known for it's antibacterial abilities to treat and prevent skin conditions beer has long since been use cosmetically. Hops and grains contribute polyphenols, used to give beer its distinct flavor. Used in our soaps to provide an herbal, conditioning, a creamy lather and to impart its herbal fragrance as a foundation to layer upon.
Cactus (nopal) - the naturally occurring pectin found in nopal has a stabilizing effect to keep oils and liquids emulsified. It is also used for its emollient properties much like aloe vera and for its natural sugars (polysaccharides) that enhance lathering properties.
Calendula flower - used medicinally is an anti-inflammatory and is soothing to the skin. As a colorant, calendula imparts a beautiful golden yellow color. Calendula has been historically significant in medicine in many cultures, and it is still important in alternative medicine today.
Castor oil - has humectant properties which draw moisture to the skin. Emollient properties soften skin. Lends to a more creamy, luxurious and stable lather and is a great superfatting oil for conditioning.
Coconut oil - the best oil that performs well in hard or salt water. Contributes to make a hard, white bar, bubbly lather, and cleansing properties to soaps. It is usually second to olive oil in must haves for soapmaking.
Cocoa butter - the fat extracted from the cocoa bean. It has a warm fragrance of chocolate. Contributes to make a hard bar of soap that is moisturizing and protects by holding moisture to the skin laying down a protective barrier. A fabulous superfatting oil for conditioning.
Coffee - the caffeine in coffee is an anti-inflammatory that reduces redness and evens complexion. We infuse coffee into olive oil for our coffee soaps and use it as a garnish and as a stimulating exfoliant.
Eggs - a rich protein and fat source also used to add conditioning properties to our soaps. We use eggs to make eggnog from scratch for some of our home-grown soap recipes. Using eggs is one of the many ways we make Gorda™ Artisan Soaps so special.
Flaxseed - high in Linolenic acid an Omega-3 fatty acid , essential for healthy skin and hair. It softens and conditions the skin. Used in Gorda™ Artisan Soaps for the mucilage (gel) it yields that provides an emollient slip, which make our soaps silky and for its grainy texture to exfoliate.
Grapeseed oil - has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to strengthen cellular structure and keeping pores clear. Grapeseed oil not only moisturies, but also astringent to tighten and firm skin. It's fatty acid profile high in Omega-6 (Linoleic acid, 69.6%), which contribute excellent conditioning properties. Great for moisturizing leaving a silky feel without being greasy.
Herbs & spices (botanicals) - used to naturally color Gorda™ Artisan Soaps, to add garnish and to fix fragrance. We also used to infuse our base oils with these herb to enhance the skin-loving properties and add exfoliation.
Honey - is a humectant that draws moisture and is put to excellent use for dry skin. It has anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties. The sugar in honey increases lather in soap and it is included in every batch we make of Gorda™ Artisan Soaps.
Milk - cows and goats milk are rich in unsaturated fatty acids and is a nourishing source of natural fatty acids to benefit the skin. Milk protein has restorative properties moisturizing and protecting skin against dryness. It makes a gentle soap with a rich, creamy lather.
Neem seed oil - used to treat a variety of skin ailments (e.g., psoriasis, eczema, dandruff) and has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiseptic properties. Neem is also used to repel fleas and ticks. Neem can be used as a natural bug repellent in soaps and lotions. It contributes to make a hard bar of soap and adds conditioning. It has a distinct earthy-nutty aroma.
Oats - used for its soothing, emollient properties and contains saponin, a gentle and natural cleanser. Oats also have anti-inflammatory properties and act as a mild exfoliant.
Olive oil - the holy grail of soapmaking olive oil is gentle enough to care for babies skin. Mild and moisturizing, olive oil creates a hard bar and allows skin to breathe. Gorda™ Artisan Soaps use a high percentage of olive oil in our soap recipes to create a gentle soap with a small creamy lather.
Palm fruit (oil) - aka "veggie" tallow. When used with combining oils makes a mild, hard bar that cleans well with rich, creamy, stable lather. Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the fruit of the oil palm, primarily the African oil palm, and to a lesser extent from the America oil palm...Wikipedia.
Shea nut butter - imparts moisturizing properties, a creamy, stable lather and hardness to soap. This is a luxury skin-loving butter that is gentle, emollient and conditions skin.
Silk (cruelty free) - when it comes to silk it's all about luxury, and silk gives the "feel" of luxury in soap texture and lather. All of our soaps are silken. We never make Gorda™ Artisan Soaps without it.
Sodium hydroxide (lye) - soap is a salt of a fatty acid. It requires lye in solution to hydrolyze the fats to make soap. It does not remain in the final product as time changes the combination of the base (lye) and fatty acid (oils) into a sodium salt (soap). We use food grade lye to insure the best quality in all our soaps.
Soybean oil - this oil is used for moisturizing and conditioning. It also contributes a stable lather. Used in combination to other skin-loving oils it makes an excellent soap. We use soybean oil for our vegetable oil recipes.
Tallow refers to animal fat in general. It is our go-to oil for our premium recipe base and provides a hard white bar with small bubbles and conditioning lather. Tallow used in soap making produces a high percentage of oleic acid, similar to oleic acid in olive oil and is a well known skin conditioner. Oleic acid is found in human sebum and performs as an emollient and moisturizer. In our experience tallow makes a better performing soap with a creamy lather.
